A 22-year-old woman, identified as Gladys Naa Borkwei, has allegedly beaten her daughter to death at Ngleshie Amanfro in the Greater Accra Region.
The deceased, who was reportedly the third child of Gladys, was rushed to a health facility in Amanfro but was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Speaking after the incident, the suspect’s mother, Honyefia, recounted that she received news about her grandchild’s condition after returning from town.
According to her, Gladys had contacted her sister to inform her that she had taken the child to the hospital but did not explain what had happened.
“Gladys called her sister to inform me that she had taken her daughter to the hospital, but she couldn’t tell her exactly what happened,” she said.
The elderly woman said she immediately rushed to the health facility, where she met her daughter.
However, by the time she arrived, medical personnel had already confirmed that the child had died.
She explained that Gladys was unable to provide a clear account of how the child sustained the injuries.
According to her, doctors who examined the body noticed severe bruises and marks, raising suspicions that the child had been physically assaulted.
“We found marks on the child. This made us believe that Gladys had assaulted the child, leading to her demise,” she told Crime Check.
The grandmother further alleged that her daughter has been struggling with drug abuse, which she believes may have contributed to the incident.
Following the child’s death, Gladys was arrested by the police as investigations continue.
The family added that the suspect was later granted bail.
