The Member of Parliament for Assin South, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, has called on the government to identify and prosecute any public officials found to have links to the alleged $300 million methamphetamine trafficking case involving Ghanaian nationals in Australia.
His demand follows recent disclosures by the Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, that ongoing investigations into the drug bust had implicated some government officials.
Addressing Parliament, the Interior Minister revealed that security agencies were interrogating several individuals within government circles in connection with the alleged international drug trafficking operation.
“Our men are on the ground. Like this Australia thing that you mentioned in passing, the Director General will tell you, even as at yesterday, we were still interrogating a lot of government officials,” Mr. Muntaka stated.
The Minister, however, stopped short of disclosing the identities of the individuals involved, citing the sensitive and ongoing nature of the investigations.
Reacting to the development, Rev. Ntim Fordjour said Ghanaians deserve to know the identities of any public officials implicated in the scandal.
“Ghanaians deserve to know the names of those involved. If any government official is connected to this matter, that person must be exposed and prosecuted,” he said.
The Assin South lawmaker stressed that the fight against narcotics trafficking would be undermined if politically exposed persons or state officials were shielded from accountability.
“Nobody, regardless of their position or political affiliation, should be above the law. Those found culpable must face justice,” he added.
According to him, Ghana’s international reputation and national security could suffer severe damage if authorities fail to act decisively against individuals involved in transnational drug crimes.
He further urged government and the security agencies to provide regular updates to the public to assure citizens that investigations were being pursued without fear or favour.
