The African Union (AU) has called for stronger regional cooperation to tackle the growing threat of terrorism in the Sahel after coordinated attacks targeted several locations across Mali on July 4, 2026.

In a statement issued on Sunday, July 5, Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, condemned the attacks in the strongest terms, describing them as a cruel assault on civilians and national security.

He expressed condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and sympathised with everyone affected. He also reaffirmed the African Union’s support for the people and government of Mali during the difficult period.

“The Chairperson extends his sincere condolences to the families of the victims and expresses his deep sympathy to all those affected by these attacks. He reiterates the African Union’s full solidarity with the Government and people of the Republic of Mali during this difficult time,” the statement said.

Mr Youssouf warned that the attacks demonstrate the continuing threat posed by terrorism and violent extremism in Mali and the wider Sahel region. He said the incident highlights the need for governments, regional bodies and continental institutions to strengthen cooperation in confronting militant groups while respecting international humanitarian law and protecting civilians.

The African Union also reaffirmed its commitment to working with Malian authorities and regional partners to restore lasting peace, stability and security across Mali and the Sahel.

The latest attacks saw insurgents launch coordinated assaults on military positions in different parts of the country, including a northern town where Malian government forces and Russian fighters are stationed, as well as another town south of the capital, Bamako.

According to the Malian armed forces, the attacks spread across several locations, including Anefis, Aguelhoc and Gao in the north, Sevare in central Mali, and Kenioroba in the south, underscoring the broad reach of the armed groups behind the operation.
