The Ghana National Council of Private Schools (GNACOPS) has stated that the Ghana Education Service’s (GES) directive suspending graduation ceremonies in pre-tertiary schools does not specifically cover private schools.
The clarification comes after many private school owners and parents expressed uncertainty following directives from the Ghana Education Service and the Greater Accra Regional Education Directorate ordering public schools to suspend planned graduation ceremonies.
In a statement issued on Friday, July 3, GNACOPS said it had reviewed the legal and administrative basis of the directive and concluded that it applies only to schools under the direct authority of the Ghana Education Service.
According to the Council, the directive does not expressly prevent privately owned schools from organising graduation or transition ceremonies.
Despite this position, GNACOPS advised its member schools to organise such events responsibly. It encouraged schools to keep ceremonies simple, child-focused, and in line with all regulatory requirements while avoiding unnecessary extravagance or displays of wealth.
The Council also reiterated its support for government initiatives aimed at promoting discipline and preserving educational standards.
It further called for stronger collaboration among education stakeholders to improve communication and ensure greater clarity whenever policies affecting the education sector are introduced.
