Brigadier General Forster Okae-Yeboah, the Director General of Joint Operations of the Ghana Armed Forces, has been appointed by President John Dramani Mahama to oversee a nationwide flood mitigation initiative aimed at preventing further flooding and safeguarding lives and property.
This appointment follows the catastrophic floods that affected parts of Accra on Monday, June 29, after prolonged heavy rainfall, resulting in widespread devastation across numerous communities in the Greater Accra Region.
Official reports indicate that the disaster resulted in 13 fatalities, impacted over 7,000 households, and affected more than 38,000 individuals, while causing significant damage to homes, businesses, and essential infrastructure.
In a Facebook post by Government Spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu on Thursday, July 2, it was announced that Brigadier General Okae-Yeboah has been assigned to lead an “uncompromising, robust, and all-action Flood Mitigation Exercise” as the government intensifies its efforts to tackle the ongoing flooding issue.
As the Director General of Joint Operations at the Ghana Armed Forces, Brigadier General Okae-Yeboah is expected to collaborate with relevant state institutions and emergency response agencies to implement immediate measures designed to reduce flood risks and protect vulnerable communities.
The Presidency also revealed that the military officer will address the nation at 11:00 a.m. on Friday to present the operations of the task force and the interventions being initiated to effectively shield Ghanaians from further flooding.
The briefing is anticipated to offer insights into the operational strategy, the agencies involved, and immediate actions to alleviate the effects of future heavy rainfall.
This latest initiative is part of the government’s comprehensive response to one of the most severe flooding incidents in Accra in recent years, as authorities continue with relief, recovery, and clean-up efforts in affected communities while pursuing longer-term measures to strengthen flood resilience.
