The High Court in Accra has approved the extradition of Fredrick Kumi, also known as “Abu Trica”, to the United States.
He is wanted there to face trial over an alleged romance fraud scheme involving about US$8 million.
The court’s decision is a major step in the extradition case after US authorities requested that he be sent to America to face criminal charges.
His lawyer, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, shared the news in a Facebook post on Thursday, July 2, 2026.
He said he was outside Ghana for work when he heard about the court’s decision.
“I am out of Ghana for work. I just heard that the case of Abu Trica has been fast tracked and a judge has just ordered his extradition. Hmmm. FBI 1 – Abu 1. I guess this issue goes to the Supreme Court,” he wrote.
The ruling comes after several months of legal proceedings. Earlier, the High Court granted Kumi bail of GH¢30 million with two justified sureties while the extradition case was being heard.
US authorities accuse Kumi of being part of a romance scam network that allegedly cheated victims out of millions of dollars.
With the latest ruling, Kumi can now be sent to the United States unless a higher court overturns the decision.
Mr Barker-Vormawor’s comments suggest that the defence team may take the case to the Supreme Court. If that happens, the extradition process could be put on hold until the court reviews the case.
The case has received a lot of public attention because of the large amount of money involved and the cooperation between Ghanaian and US law enforcement agencies during the investigation.
If an appeal is filed, the Supreme Court will decide whether the High Court followed the law in approving the extradition before Kumi can be transferred to the United States.
