Residents in parts of Accra were seen collecting goods carried away by Monday’s floodwaters after heavy rains washed items from an unidentified warehouse onto roads and surrounding communities.
Videos and reports shared on social media showed crowds scrambling through flooded streets and debris to retrieve items carried away by the rushing water.
The recovered goods reportedly included food items, toiletries, gas cylinders, and electrical appliances found along the Tema Motorway and nearby areas.
The warehouse from which the goods were washed away has not been officially identified. Authorities are yet to confirm the extent of damage to the facility or the value of the items lost.
The incident was one of several recorded after heavy rains on Monday morning triggered widespread flooding across the capital, leaving major roads inundated, homes and businesses flooded, and traffic severely disrupted.
Among the worst-hit areas was the Tetteh Quashie Interchange, where floodwaters submerged sections of the underpass, leaving several vehicles stranded.
Other affected communities included Tse Addo, Alajo, Achimota, Dzorwulu, Tesano, Weija, Mallam, Spintex, Apenkwa, and parts of the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange.
Floodwaters also crossed sections of the N1 Highway, particularly along the Accra–Kasoa stretch through Weija and Mallam, causing major traffic delays during the Monday morning rush hour.
The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has deployed emergency response teams to affected areas and advised residents in flood-prone and low-lying communities to remain alert, avoid flooded roads, and relocate to safer areas where necessary.
The Interior Minister has also urged residents of Accra to work from home on Monday as the situation continues to unfold.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Meteorological Agency has warned that more rainfall is expected over the next 24 hours, following weeks of heavy rains that have caused significant damage across parts of southern Ghana.
