The Bono Regional Police Command has announced that it has initiated an investigation into a prophetess regarding the alleged assault and unlawful confinement of a 16-year-old boy in Asufufu, located in the Sunyani East Municipality.
According to a statement from the Public Affairs Unit of the Ghana Police Service, officers responded to a distress call on June 23, 2026, indicating that the suspect, identified as 39-year-old Rebecca Kumi, the founder of the Overcomers Church, had purportedly assaulted and held the teenager in a room for several days.
The police reported that the boy was accused of stealing money by the suspect.
“When police arrived at the church, they met the suspect’s mother, who denied knowledge of the incident. However, a search of the premises led to the discovery of the victim locked in a room,” the statement said.
The boy was reportedly found wearing red shorts, covered with a cloth, and exhibiting visible signs of assault, including injuries on his right shoulder and swelling and dark discolouration around both eyes.
Preliminary investigations indicated that the victim was allegedly beaten with a stick, slapped in the face, and confined for approximately five days.
The victim informed the police that he had been residing with the suspect since 2024 and denied stealing from her.
He also stated that the incident commenced on June 17, 2026, when he was questioned about missing money, US dollars, and a Samsung mobile phone.
The boy has been admitted to the Sunyani Municipal Hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment.
Furthermore, the police stated that the suspect, during interrogation in the presence of her lawyer, confessed to the offence and is expected to be brought before the court.
The command praised a Good Samaritan who aided in the rescue and encouraged the public to continue providing reliable information to assist in the fight against crime.
