Black Stars captain Jordan Ayew has called on Ghanaians to continue supporting and praying for the national team as they prepare for what he described as a crucial group-stage campaign at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Speaking during a send-off event in Alexandria, Virginia, before the team’s departure to Rhode Island, Ayew expressed confidence in the squad’s ability to make the nation proud despite the difficult challenge ahead.
Ghana has been drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England, and Croatia, with the Black Stars set to begin their World Cup journey against Panama on June 17 in Toronto. The team will then face England and Croatia in two other highly anticipated matches.
Addressing supporters and members of the Ghanaian community, Ayew emphasized the importance of national support as the team seeks to progress beyond the group stage.
“We have three massive games for us, and we want to make you guys proud, we want to make Ghana proud,” the captain said.
The experienced forward acknowledged the quality of the opposition but remained optimistic about Ghana’s chances of success. According to him, the backing of Ghanaians both at home and abroad will be a key source of motivation for the players.
“Obviously, it’s not going to be easy, but with your prayers and your support, hopefully we’ll be successful,” he added.
Ayew also thanked Ghanaians for their continued encouragement and urged them to remain united behind the team throughout the tournament.
“We want to thank everyone for your support and keep on praying for us because we’re here to make history,” he said.
The Black Stars recently concluded a training camp in Washington, where head coach Carlos Queiroz and his technical team fine-tuned preparations ahead of the tournament. The team has now arrived in Providence, Rhode Island, for the final phase of preparations before travelling to Canada for their opening fixture.
Ayew, who is participating in his third FIFA World Cup, is the most experienced player in Queiroz’s 26-man squad.
His leadership and experience are expected to play a major role as Ghana aims to make a strong impression on football’s biggest stage and create another memorable chapter in the country’s football history.
