Telecel Ghana has appealed to the public to help address the increasing cases of fibre cuts and theft of telecommunications infrastructure across the country.
The company says the growing problem continues to affect service delivery and places a heavy financial burden on telecommunications operators.
Speaking at a media roundtable in Kumasi, Telecel Ghana’s Director of External Affairs, Mr. Komla Buami, described the destruction of fibre cables and theft of telecom equipment as serious threats to stable and reliable connectivity nationwide.
He explained that road construction projects remain one of the main causes of fibre cuts. However, he noted that deliberate acts of vandalism and theft are becoming an equally significant source of network disruptions.
Mr. Buami also raised concerns about the increasing theft of fibre chamber covers. According to him, the practice exposes critical infrastructure to damage and creates additional operational challenges for service providers.
He revealed that fibre cuts have cost the telecommunications industry billions of dollars over the last four years. On average, Telecel Ghana records between three and nine fibre cuts every day.
To address the challenge, the company has been working closely with the Ministry of Roads and Highways, the Ministry of Communications and other stakeholders to improve the protection of telecommunications infrastructure across the country.
Mr. Buami said Telecel continues to strengthen security measures around its facilities. However, he stressed that security agencies must also incorporate telecommunications installations into their routine patrols and surveillance activities to help reduce theft and vandalism.
Beyond infrastructure protection, he announced a major investment and community engagement initiative in the Ashanti Region.
According to him, Telecel has designated June as “Ashanti Week,” a month-long programme aimed at strengthening partnerships, expanding investments and deepening community engagement throughout the region.
The initiative, which will be spearheaded by the Telecel Ghana Foundation, will feature several activities, including the launch of a coding and robotics programme, support for healthcare facilities, the Ashanti Golf Tournament and special promotional offers for customers.
Mr. Buami said the programme reflects the company’s commitment to supporting local communities while driving innovation and development in the region.
