Govt. to recruit 10,000 teachers and lecturers – Education Minister

The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, says the government is actively recruiting about 7,000 teachers and 3,000 lecturers to help address the country’s shortage in the education sector.

He explained that authorities are also working to secure financial clearance to bring in more staff.

He noted that Ghana needs at least 50,000 teachers nationwide, but he said the final number depends on the government’s budget and its capacity to absorb the cost.

“Mr. Speaker, currently, we are undertaking some recruitment of about 7000 teachers across the country. And for the Tertiary Education level, close to 3000 lecturers to be able to fill in the gap.

“But if you do a national assessment of our needs, we need a minimum of 50,000 teachers across the country, but that is subject to budget and the budget being able to absorb that,” he stated.

Mr Iddrisu made these comments in Parliament on Friday, May 29, 2026, while responding to questions from lawmakers.

He also highlighted challenges in some parts of the country, including Prestea Huni-Valley, where he said 176 teachers currently handle several classrooms. According to him, parents in that area are also paying the salaries of some of these teachers.

The Education Minister further announced that a new group of recruited teachers will begin work on July 1, 2026, as part of efforts to strengthen staffing in schools across the country.
