NHIS tariffs to increase from August 2026 – Mintah Akandoh

Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has announced that the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) tariffs will increase from August 2026 as part of efforts to strengthen the scheme and improve healthcare financing.

He said the tariff adjustment is intended to make the NHIS more sustainable while ensuring that healthcare providers receive adequate payments for the services they offer to insured patients.

Addressing Parliament’s Assurance Committee, Mr Akandoh also disclosed that the Mahama administration has been transferring funds from the National Health Insurance Levy (NHIL) on time to enable the prompt settlement of claims.

“I’m happy to announce that very soon, we are going to increase the tariffs of the National Health Insurance. I think in August it’s going to start,” he said.

The Minister also warned health facilities against demanding extra payments from NHIS subscribers, describing the practice, commonly known as co-payment, as illegal.

According to him, investigations have uncovered cases where patients covered by the NHIS were still being asked to pay additional fees for services.

“We have also detected some kind of fraud in the system. We have detected this kind of co-payment, as they call it, which is an illegal payment. We are even prosecuting some of them. We have arrested some, they are under prosecution,” he stated.

Mr Akandoh stressed that the government will continue monitoring healthcare facilities to ensure they comply with NHIS regulations.

He urged all service providers to operate within the law and cautioned that anyone found engaging in illegal co-payment practices would face legal action.

“I will plead with all service providers that let us do the right thing because we are on the ground, and we will come after you,” he added.
