Akomadan accident leaves 12 dead, 2 persons in critical condition

About 12 persons have been confirmed dead, and two others are in critical condition following a head-on collision between a commercial minibus and a trailer in Akomadan, located in the Offinso North District of the Ashanti Region.

The accident took place on Tuesday afternoon in front of the Offinso North District Assembly.

Reports indicate that the minibus was en route from Kumasi to Wenchi for the Eid celebration, while the trailer was traveling from Techiman towards Kumasi.

Akomadan District Police Commander, DSP Paul Boabeng Donkor, in a statement confirmed that the driver of the commercial vehicle attempted to overtake another vehicle but swerved into the path of the oncoming trailer, resulting in the accident.

Dr. Samuel Freeman Mensah, Medical Superintendent at the Nkenkaasu Government Hospital, reported that 11 passengers were declared dead upon arrival at the hospital.

One additional victim succumbed to injuries while being transported to Techiman for further medical care in a referral case.

He further stated that two survivors are currently in stable condition and receiving medical treatment.

Dr. Mensah mentioned that families have started to arrive to identify their loved ones.

He urged the public, particularly those with relatives traveling to Wenchi for Eid, to visit the hospital.

The deceased have since been placed in the morgue of the Nkenkaasu Government Hospital for preservation and identification.

Authorities have also removed the damaged vehicles to alleviate traffic congestion and have initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
