Thunderstorm kills more than 20 cattle in Tatale

A herdsman at Tatale in the Northern Region, Sarkin Amaru, has been left in distress after a thunderstorm on Monday, May 25, reportedly killed more than 20 of his cattle in a single strike.

The unfortunate incident is said to have occurred during a heavy evening rainfall accompanied by lightning and thunder in the area.

According to Mr. Amaru, he was inside his hut when the storm intensified.

He explained that shortly after a loud thunderclap, he noticed one of his cattle suddenly collapse. Thinking it was an isolated case, he quickly rushed out in an attempt to save it.

However, upon reaching the animal, he realised the situation was far worse than expected. Several other cattle were also collapsing at the same time.

In total, more than 20 cattle reportedly died instantly as a result of the lightning strike, leaving the herdsman devastated and without his main source of livelihood.

Mr. Amaru described the incident as a major blow to his family’s survival, explaining that the cattle were his only means of income and support.

He said the loss has left him stranded and uncertain about how to continue taking care of his household needs.

Speaking after the incident, he appealed for urgent support from government authorities, the district assembly, individuals, and charitable organisations.

“I am appealing to the government, district assembly, individuals and organisations to come to my aid. Any amount will be appreciated,” he said.

The tragedy has drawn sympathy from members of the local community, who describe the incident as rare but extremely devastating.

Lightning strikes, though not common, can sometimes cause mass animal deaths during severe storms, especially when livestock are gathered in open areas.

For now, Mr. Amaru is calling for assistance to help him recover from the loss and rebuild his livelihood after the sudden disaster.
