A six-year-old girl has tragically died after drowning in an uncovered septic tank at Gbetsile in the Greater Accra Region.
The incident reportedly occurred on the evening of Sunday, May 24, 2026, when the child, identified as Princess Ama Mensah, was playing within the neighbourhood with other children before she accidentally fell into the uncovered septic tank.
According to residents, frantic efforts were made to rescue the girl after she was reported missing.
Family members and neighbours later discovered her trapped inside the septic tank after a search in the area.
Residents say the child was pulled out unconscious and rushed to a nearby health facility, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
Eyewitnesses and community members blamed the tragedy on negligence, alleging that the septic tank had been left uncovered for several days without proper barricades or warning signs to prevent accidents.
The incident has triggered grief and shock within Gbetsile, with residents calling on local authorities to enforce stricter safety regulations for property owners and developers.
Police have since visited the scene and begun investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Meanwhile, the body of the deceased has reportedly been deposited at a morgue pending further investigations and burial arrangements.
