Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has defended his criticism of a Circuit Court judge handling the case involving NPP Bono Regional Chairman Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC.
In a social media post on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, Afenyo-Markin said he had every right under the Constitution to speak out about what he believes is unfair behaviour by the judge.
He said he believes there is a worrying pattern in the way the Circuit Court 9 judge handles political cases. According to him, the Minority Caucus in Parliament plans to take further action and follow legal and constitutional processes over the matter.
His comments came after the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) criticised his earlier remarks about the judge, describing them as unprofessional and unethical.
But Afenyo-Markin insisted that speaking against what he sees as judicial misconduct should not be taken as a personal attack on the judge.
He also called on the Chief Justice to closely monitor the judge and ensure he acts professionally and fairly in court.
The issue is linked to the ongoing detention and court case involving Abronye DC, which has sparked political debate and reactions from some members of the opposition NPP.
GBA spokesperson Saviour Kudze said Afenyo-Markin’s comments were below the standard expected from a senior lawyer and political leader.
Kudze explained that if anyone is unhappy with a judge’s decision, there are proper legal channels to challenge it through the courts.
“The appellate system is not there for fun,” he said, adding that judges should not be publicly insulted or have their qualifications questioned.
