Uruguayan midfielder Lucas Torreira has reportedly been attacked in Istanbul, Turkey, in an incident that has shocked the football world.
Torreira, who plays for Turkish giants Galatasaray, was allegedly punched by a man at a hotel in Istanbul.
According to reports, the attacker is said to have been obsessed with Torreira’s wife and had followed the couple’s movements through social media.
The incident is believed to have taken place at the Rixos Hotel, where Torreira and his family were staying.
The midfielder reportedly thought the man approaching him wanted a photograph, but the situation quickly turned violent when the man suddenly struck him in the face.
Security personnel and hotel staff are said to have intervened immediately, while the attacker was later detained by authorities for questioning.
In his statement to police, the suspect allegedly admitted that he had developed “platonic feelings” for Torreira’s wife.
He claimed that she had previously felt uncomfortable with his behaviour and had obtained a restraining order against him.
The attacker further stated that after seeing photos of Torreira with his wife on Instagram, he became angry and travelled to the hotel after tracking their location online.
He said he acted “impulsively” when he saw the footballer in person.
Lucas Torreira, a former Arsenal and Atlético Madrid midfielder, has been one of Galatasaray’s key players since joining the club, helping them compete strongly in the Turkish Super Lig and European competitions. He is known for his aggressive playing style and high energy in midfield.
