Personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) in the Volta Region have successfully rescued two crash victims and prevented a potential fire outbreak following a road accident involving a fuel tanker and a mini truck.
According to the GNFS, the incident occurred along the Ho–Asikuma Highway in the Volta Region after a fuel tanker reportedly collided with a mini truck under circumstances still under investigation.
Emergency response teams from the Fire Service were quickly dispatched to the scene after distress calls were received from motorists and residents in the area.
Upon arrival, firefighters found the damaged vehicles blocking sections of the road while fuel from the tanker had begun spilling onto the highway, raising fears of a possible fire outbreak or explosion.
The GNFS said officers immediately secured the scene and carried out rescue operations to save two trapped victims from the wreckage.
The victims, who sustained varying degrees of injuries, were rescued and handed over to medical personnel for treatment. Their identities have not yet been officially released.
Firefighters also worked to contain the fuel leakage and prevent sparks or flames from igniting the spilt substance, a situation authorities say could have resulted in a major disaster if not controlled quickly.
The operation involved cooling procedures, traffic control measures, and safety monitoring around the accident scene until the situation was brought under control.
The GNFS commended its officers for their swift intervention and urged motorists transporting flammable substances to exercise caution on the roads to help reduce accidents involving fuel tankers and heavy-duty vehicles.
Authorities have meanwhile launched investigations into the cause of the crash.
