Workers of the National Identification Authority (NIA), represented by the Public Services Workers’ Union (PSWU) under the Trades Union Congress (TUC) Ghana, have confirmed that they will begin an indefinite strike on Wednesday, May 13, 2026.

The decision was announced in a joint statement signed by Assistant Divisional Secretary Godsway Ayivor and Divisional Chairman Bismark Francis Bangfudem Nyuzaghl.

The union directed all members across the country to stay away from work from midnight on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, until further notice.

“Effective 12:00 midnight, the indefinite strike is fully activated. Accordingly, no member of the NIA Division is expected to show up for work until further notice,” the statement said.

The union also asked regional executives to create monitoring teams to supervise the strike and ensure that workers in all NIA offices comply fully with the action.

“All regional executives and members are also directed to form monitoring units, go round the various offices, and ensure full compliance with the strike without fail,” the statement added.

The workers want government to immediately approve and implement migration reports connected to their conditions of service. Union leaders also encouraged members facing challenges during the strike to contact divisional executives for assistance.

“In solidarity, we stand. No retreat, no surrender until victory,” the statement declared.

The industrial action is likely to affect operations at NIA offices nationwide. Services such as Ghana Card registration, card issuance, and other identification-related activities could face major disruptions.

Meanwhile, NIA management has appealed to the workers to allow the government two more weeks to complete the approval and implementation processes concerning the migration reports and staff conditions of service.
