My goal against USA remains my favourite – Asamoah Gyan

Asamoah Gyan, Ghana’s all-time top scorer, has said his goal against the United States at the 2010 FIFA World Cup remains his favourite World Cup goal because of how important the moment was for Ghana.

During his interview today, the former Black Stars captain, popularly known as Baby Jet, spoke about some of the most memorable goals of his football career.

He recalled his historic goal at the 2006 FIFA World Cup, which was the first goal ever scored by a Ghanaian at the tournament.

“It’s something that will remain because it’s the first Ghanaian ever goal in a World Cup, which everybody was expecting,” he said.

Although he described the goal against the Czech Republic as one of his most important, Gyan said his favourite World Cup goal was the extra-time winner against the United States at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

“I think that was my best goal. The timing was on point. It was 1-1 in extra time, everybody was optimistic about how it was going to come,” he said.

“As a striker, that wasn’t my best goal I’ve ever scored, but because of the timing and everything, I would say it was my best World Cup goal.”

Gyan also revealed that his personal favourite goal in his entire career was scored against the England national team.

However, he said the strike against the United States stands out the most among the six World Cup goals he scored for Ghana.

The former Sunderland A.F.C. and Al Ain FC forward remains Africa’s highest scorer in FIFA World Cup history with six goals across three tournaments.

Ghana made its first World Cup appearance at the 2006 tournament in Germany, where the Ghana national football team defeated the United States 2-1 to qualify for the Round of 16.
