Former Chief Executive Officer of the National Food Buffer Stock Company (NAFCO), Hanan Abdul-Wahab Aludiba, was released from the custody of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) but was later asked to return for more procedures, according to his lawyers.
Former Attorney General and lawyer for Mr. Aludiba, Godfred Yeboah Dame, said his client was released on Wednesday, May 6, and told to report back to EOCO the next morning.
“Yes, he was released yesterday and he was asked to come there this morning and the lawyers accompanied him again,” Mr. Dame stated.
Mr. Dame explained that Mr. Aludiba returned to EOCO around 10 a.m. with his legal team. He said reports claiming his client failed to appear at the EOCO office were false.
“So clearly it was false. He was there today at 10 a.m. with his lawyers. They’re all there today,” he said.
According to Mr. Dame, when they arrived, EOCO officials told them they had to wait for the agency’s Executive Director, who was not available at the time.
“After a while, they said he was not there, so he could go,” he added.
Mr. Dame said they later left the EOCO office, but shortly after, they received another message asking them to return.
“Just a few minutes ago, they sent a message indicating that they’ve been called back for whatever process EOCO wishes to undertake,” he stated.
He added that Mr. Aludiba and his lawyers were back at EOCO and cooperating with investigators.
The issue comes after controversy over the Attorney General’s decision to drop charges against Mr. Aludiba and his wife in an ongoing criminal case. Reports say investigators later found new evidence connected to the matter.
Deputy Attorney General Justice Srem-Sai defended the decision to withdraw the charges, saying it is a normal legal step when new evidence comes up during investigations.
However, Mr. Dame disagreed with the move, saying the situation raises questions about how criminal cases and investigations are being handled in the country.
