Ghana’s Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has announced that a nationwide timetable for transformer replacement and upgrades will soon be released as part of efforts to stabilise electricity supply.
The Minister said the upcoming schedule will show when communities across the country will benefit from the transformer upgrade programme, which aims to improve power distribution and reduce outages.
According to him, the government has already installed about 140 new transformers, with an additional 300 expected to be deployed in the coming weeks.
The broader plan targets the installation of more than 2,500 transformers nationwide to strengthen the electricity grid.
Mr. Jinapor explained that while power generation capacity has improved, challenges within the transmission and distribution network, particularly overloaded and ageing transformers, remain a key cause of instability in electricity supply.
He noted that the release of the timetable will enhance transparency and allow households and businesses to prepare for scheduled upgrades in their respective areas.
The Minister made the remarks during a town hall meeting in Koforidua, where he also reassured the public that the government is working to prevent a return to persistent power outages, commonly referred to as “dumsor”.
He further indicated that the transformer replacement initiative forms part of broader reforms aimed at reinforcing Ghana’s power infrastructure and meeting rising electricity demand driven by urban growth and industrial expansion.
