Dumsor: We’re still not out of the woods — Duncan Amoah

The Executive Secretary of the Chamber of Petroleum Consumers, Duncan Amoah, has warned that Ghana is still facing power supply problems, despite government assurances.

His comments come after recent power outages in some parts of the country. The government explained that the outages were caused by ongoing transformer upgrade works and a fire at a control room operated by the Ghana Grid Company near the Akosombo Dam, which forced one of the machines to shut down.

During the International Workers’ Day celebrations, John Dramani Mahama said all six generating units at the dam are now working fully again, which should help improve power supply.

During an interview on Saturday, May 2, 2026, Mr. Amoah said the situation is not that simple.

He explained that Ghana’s power problems are not only about generating electricity, but also about the condition of the whole system.

According to him, much of the country’s electricity infrastructure is old and has not been properly upgraded over the years.

Because of this, things like heavy rain or strong winds can easily cause faults, such as damaged poles or lines touching each other, leading to power cuts in some communities.

He stressed that the real issue is the ageing infrastructure, and until that is fixed, power outages may continue.
