GRIDCO fire: Four generation units restored at Akosombo – Energy Ministry

The government of Ghana says the power situation is beginning to stabilise following recent disruptions at the Akosombo Dam.

The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, in a Facebook post, said a fourth generating unit at the facility has been restored, just hours after engineers brought a third unit back online.

The outage was triggered by a fire at the dam’s substation, which damaged the control room and led to the loss of more than 1,000 megawatts of power.

The incident caused widespread electricity instability across parts of the country.

Engineers are now working to restore the remaining units in phases, with officials expressing optimism that the national power supply will improve as more capacity is brought back online.

Mr Jinapor commended technical teams for their efforts, describing their work as critical to resolving the crisis under challenging conditions.

Meanwhile, the government says it is continuing efforts to fully restore operations at the dam and ensure a reliable electricity supply for households and businesses.
