Ghana to host 2027 U-20 AFCON tournament

Ghana is preparing to host one of Africa’s biggest youth football events after the President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kurt Okraku, confirmed that the country will stage the 2027 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The tournament will bring together the best young football talents from across the continent, with Ghana’s U-20 team, the Black Satellites, playing host.

The announcement is seen as a major boost for Ghanaian football and a sign of growing confidence in the country’s ability to organise top-level competitions.

This will not be the first time Ghana hosts a major youth tournament. The country previously hosted the African Youth Championship 1999, where eight teams competed for continental glory.

That tournament helped strengthen Ghana’s reputation as a strong football nation and contributed to the development of several top players.

Over the years, the Black Satellites have built an impressive record in youth football. Ghana has won the U-20 AFCON four times and made global history by winning the 2009 FIFA U-20 World Cup, becoming the first African country to achieve that feat. These achievements highlight the country’s strong tradition of developing young football talent.

Hosting the 2027 tournament is expected to inspire a new generation of players while boosting tourism and local business. It will also give Ghana a chance to strengthen its football structures and facilities ahead of the competition.
