Missing girl found at airport, woman arrested

A suspected child trafficking case was foiled at Accra International Airport after police intercepted a woman attempting to leave the country with a missing nine-year-old girl.

The suspect, identified as Regina Mamle Tawiah, aged 36, was arrested at the airport after authorities discovered she was traveling with Hawa Hamidu, who had earlier been reported missing from Agormanya Zongo in Odumase-Krobo District in Eastern Region.

According to preliminary police reports, the child’s disappearance had triggered concern within the community, prompting a search effort by family members and the Ghana police service.

The situation took a dramatic turn when security officials at the airport flagged the pair under suspicious circumstances during departure checks.

Further verification revealed that the girl had not been travelling with a legal guardian, raising immediate alarm and leading to the arrest of the suspect.

The Ghana police service believes the interception may have prevented a possible case of cross-border child trafficking, although investigations are still ongoing to establish the full details and motive behind the incident.

Meanwhile, the young girl has since been safely reunited with her family, who expressed immense relief and gratitude to the police and airport security personnel for their swift and decisive intervention.

The Ghana Police Service has confirmed that a full investigation is underway to determine whether the suspect acted alone or as part of a wider network.
