The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has asked the Sunyani West Municipal Assembly to pay back GH¢116,000 after it was found to have wrongly used public money to pay some staff as end-of-service benefits.
The issue came up during the Committee’s ongoing review of the Auditor-General’s report on Tuesday, April 21. The Assembly admitted that it transferred GH¢135,000 for this purpose without proper legal approval.
Officials from the Assembly told the Committee that GH¢19,000 has already been refunded, leaving a remaining amount of GH¢116,000.
The Committee was not satisfied with the situation and has ordered the Assembly to pay back the rest of the money within 30 days. It also warned that there will be consequences if they fail to do so.
“Respectfully, within 30 days we want the monies paid and the receipt given to the regional representative of the Audit Service, with a copy sent to the Public Accounts Committee,” Abena Osei Asare, Chairperson for the Public Accounts Committee, demanded.
