Grêmio refuse to release Amuzu for Ghana duty

Brazilian side Grêmio have blocked winger Francis Amuzu from joining the Black Stars for Ghana’s upcoming international friendly against Mexico.

According to reports by Brazilian journalist Filipe Duarte, the club received notice that the player was expected to report to Ghana’s training camp on Thursday, May 14.

However, Grêmio refused to release the 26-year-old, insisting the notice came too late and that the winger remains an important part of the squad during a crucial period of the season.

The Brazilian club are preparing for key matches against Confiança, Bahia, Palestino and Santos, and believes losing Amuzu at this stage could affect their campaign.

The decision is a major setback for Ghana, as Amuzu had been expected to make his long-awaited debut for the Black Stars under new head coach Carlos Queiroz. The friendly against Mexico forms part of Ghana’s preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Born in Accra, Amuzu moved to Belgium at a young age and represented Belgium at the youth level before switching his international allegiance to Ghana earlier this year.

The winger previously rejected Ghana’s invitation in 2022, saying his international future was with Belgium, but later decided to commit to the Black Stars.

Amuzu joined Grêmio from Belgian giants RSC Anderlecht in February 2025 and has quickly become an important player for the Brazilian club. Since his move, he has contributed goals and assists in domestic and continental competitions.
