Doubts are driving Black Stars – Jerome Opoku

Ghana defender Jerome Opoku has revealed that criticism and doubts about the Black Stars have become a major source of motivation for the team following their impressive 0-0 draw against England at the FIFA World Cup.

Opoku delivered a commanding performance at the Gillette Stadium as Ghana frustrated the highly-rated Three Lions to secure a valuable point and move to four points in Group L.

Speaking after the match, the centre-back credited head coach Carlos Queiroz for the confidence he has shown in him and his teammates.

“I’ve always believed in my abilities. What I needed was the opportunity and the confidence from the coach, and he has given me that,” Opoku said. “I appreciate the support from the fans and we will continue to stay grounded.”

The defender also addressed the criticism that surrounded the Black Stars before the tournament, with many questioning the team’s quality and chances of making an impact on the world stage.

According to Opoku, the squad has used those negative opinions as motivation to prove people wrong.

“Many people didn’t believe this team was good enough. Some even called us one of the worst Ghana teams in history,” he said. “The players have spoken about it among ourselves and we have used it as fuel.”

The defender explained that being doubted is something he has experienced throughout his career and that overcoming criticism has become part of his character.

“I’ve always been an underdog. Being doubted is nothing new to me. I actually enjoy proving people wrong, and I think the team feels the same way,” he added. “Now we’re showing the fans and the rest of the world what we are capable of.”

Opoku also praised Ghana’s defensive organisation against England, saying the team executed its game plan effectively.

“We studied their strengths and knew they had a lot of attacking quality. They have players who make dangerous runs, but I think we defended really well as a team,” he said.

Despite Ghana moving closer to qualification for the Round of 32, Opoku insists the squad remains focused on the task ahead.

“The atmosphere in the camp is positive, but we’re staying humble,” he said. “We’re focused on the next game against Croatia and we’re not going to let this result get into our heads. We want to keep improving and continue our journey.”
