SMT Ghana has donated braille sheets and bags of rice to the Akropong School for the Blind in the Eastern Region.
The initiative reflects SMT Ghana’s values of caring, daring, and sharing, supporting communities, creating opportunities, and making a positive difference beyond business operations.
The Managing Director of SMT Ghana, Amaury Lescaux, accompanied by the Finance Director, Afia Owusu Ansah; the Aftersales Mining Director, Maxwell Mokgolomoth, and the Marketing and Communication Director, Hilda Peasah, donated the items to the school.
A highlight of the visit was a braille demonstration by the Girls’ Prefect, who showed the team how visually impaired students read and write using braille paper, a slate and a stylus.
The team also had the opportunity to try writing in braille, gaining a deeper appreciation of the students’ learning experience and resilience.
Inspiring story
Speaking during the presentation, Mr Lescaux said: “At SMT Ghana, we believe that education is a powerful tool for transforming lives and should be accessible to every child. We are honoured to support the Akropong School for the Blind with learning materials and food supplies that will contribute to the students’ education and well-being.”Graphic Online subscription
The Managing Director of SMT Ghana also shared the inspiring story of Hakim Arezki, a French blind football (Cécifoot) player of Algerian origin, whose journey from losing his sight to becoming an international athlete demonstrated that challenges should not limit one’s dreams.
Two members of the school’s donation committee, Joseph Sowuh and Maxwell Asante Oware, who received the items on behalf of the school, expressed their heartfelt appreciation to SMT Ghana for the generous donation, noting that the braille materials would play a vital role in enhancing academic work, improving access to learning resources and empowering students to achieve their full potential despite their visual impairment.
They said the food items would provide the much-needed support to the school’s feeding programme, contributing to the overall welfare and well-being of the students.
According to them, the gesture demonstrated a strong commitment to inclusivity and social responsibility, and they encouraged other corporate entities, organisations and individuals to follow suit by extending support to institutions that serve persons with disabilities.
