Urbanisation, technology driving rise in DNA testing in Ghana — Sociologist

A sociologist has said that changing lifestyles, urbanisation and easier access to technology are contributing to the growing demand for DNA testing in Ghana.

Dr. Mark Obeng, a senior lecturer at the University of Ghana, explained that the rise in DNA testing reflects changing social values and family dynamics in modern society.

“Previously, without the technology, paternity issues were largely guesswork. Now, results can be obtained within days, making certainty accessible,” he said during his interview today.

According to Dr. Obeng, society has become more open than it was in the past, especially when it comes to relationships and personal choices.

“It is no longer as taboo as it used to be. Conversations about relationships, body count and personal freedom are becoming more common,” Obeng said.

He also noted that urbanisation has weakened some of the traditional systems that once helped regulate behaviour and discourage affairs outside marriage.

“In traditional societies, there were strong mechanisms social and even spiritual that discouraged extramarital relationships. Urbanisation has weakened those structures,” he explained.

Dr. Obeng said people often turn to DNA testing when they begin to feel uncertain or suspicious in their relationships.

“When people feel uncertain, they seek clarity. DNA testing provides that clarity,” he said.

He added that DNA testing does not always destroy families or relationships. In some cases, it can help address doubts and unresolved tension.

“Many couples who seek testing already have suspicions. It is better to confront the truth than live in denial,” he added.

However, he warned that such discoveries can have emotional and psychological effects, especially on children, depending on how and when the information is revealed.

“No society is fully prepared for such shifts. But as exposure increases, people gradually adapt,” Obeng said.
