Power restored to parts of Accra after GRIDCo Mallam substation fire

The Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) has announced that power supply has been restored to some areas of Accra affected by a fire at its Mallam Substation, while efforts are underway to reconnect the remaining communities.

In a statement released in Tema on October 14, 2026, the company said its technical teams were working to restore electricity to all affected areas as soon as possible.

The disruption occurred at about 2:36 a.m. on Wednesday after a fault at the substation triggered a fire involving one of its transformers.

Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) responded to the incident and successfully extinguished the flames.

GRIDCo disclosed that its engineers are working to establish what caused the fire, while steps have been initiated to replace the damaged transformer. However, the company has yet to provide a timeline for installing the replacement unit.

The power transmission company apologised to affected customers for the disruption and expressed gratitude to customers and other stakeholders for their patience and understanding as restoration work continues.
