The Ashaiman Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) has arrested a commercial driver and his conductor for allegedly charging passengers fares above the officially approved rate.
The suspects have been identified as the driver, Abubakar Fuseini, and his conductor, Majeed. They were arrested following growing complaints from commuters about unauthorised fare increases by some commercial transport operators.
The arrests came after reports that the two were charging passengers GH¢20 for a journey that officially attracts a fare of GH¢16.
Passengers have expressed frustration over the practice, particularly at a time when many households are already struggling with rising living costs.
Some commuters also alleged that conductors often respond with insults or threats of removing them from vehicles when they challenge the higher fares.
The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has maintained that there has been no official approval for an increase in transport fares.
The union has therefore condemned the actions of drivers and conductors who impose higher charges without authorisation.
It said operators who engage in such practices are acting outside the approved fare structure and could face sanctions.
The two suspects are currently in police custody and are assisting with investigations. They are expected to be processed for court as the authorities continue their inquiries.
