PAC instructs CWSA to recover over GH¢300K owed by 72 Police stations

The Public Accounts Committee of Parliament (PAC) has instructed the management of the Community Water and Sanitation Agency (CWSA) to contact the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) to recover more than GH¢300,000 in unpaid water bills owed by 72 police stations and posts nationwide.

The directive was issued during a PAC sitting after the Committee raised concerns about outstanding payments due to the Community Water and Sanitation Agency from several institutions.

Committee Chairperson Abena Osei-Asare questioned why the affected police facilities had failed to settle their bills and why the agency had not pursued the appropriate authorities to recover the outstanding amount.

She noted that although the debt is substantial for the Community Water and Sanitation Agency, it could be resolved through direct discussions with the leadership of the Ghana Police Service.

She consequently directed the agency’s management to engage the Inspector-General of Police and request his intervention to secure payment of the outstanding debt.

“You think the IGP would be happy that 72 police posts or police stations owe just GH¢300,000? If you go to him today, he will write a cheque for you. GH¢300,000 for 72 posts and this is how you want to embarrass the police? That 72 of their outfits owe GH¢300,000 to Community Water. You better go to the IGP and collect the money.”

The outstanding debt, which exceeds GH¢300,000, is said to have accumulated from water services supplied to the affected police stations and posts.

The PAC warned that prolonged arrears of this nature could affect the financial operations of the Community Water and Sanitation Agency, particularly when institutions delay settling their bills.
