The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has urged religious leaders across Ghana to step up efforts to promote peace, tolerance and unity.
He said the Police alone cannot maintain peace if citizens are unwilling to tolerate one another and resolve disagreements through dialogue.
The IGP disclosed that some people linked to the recent incident in which a pastor was allegedly slapped had been arrested and granted bail.
He, however, said the incident should serve as a reminder of the need for religious leaders and citizens to avoid actions and comments that could create tension.
Mr Yohuno appealed to Christian and Muslim leaders to help address growing religious tensions and promote peaceful coexistence.
The IGP warned that several African countries had experienced serious conflicts because of religious divisions.
He urged Ghanaians to protect the peace the country enjoys by showing mutual respect, tolerance and understanding regardless of their religious beliefs.
