The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has asked the Wiawso College of Education to find effective ways to recover over GH¢380,000 in unpaid school fees.
This comes after a report by the Auditor-General showed that many students still owe the college money.
In total, 1,016 students owe about GH¢587,397.13. Out of this, 510 past students (graduates) alone owe GH¢488,085.85.
When the school appeared before the committee in Kumasi, its management said they have managed to recover GH¢207,081.90 so far, which is less than half of the total amount owed.
The college explained that much of the debt is linked to the Untrained Teachers Diploma in Basic Education (UTDBE) programme.
Some students completed the programme but did not pay their fees or come back to collect their certificates.
The school said it has been using the collection of certificates as a way to get people to pay, but admitted that this method is not working well.
However, the committee was not satisfied with this approach and wants the school to be more active in getting the money back.
“I think that sitting down to wait for people to come for their certificates before you recover the money is not good enough. You have been instructed to recover the monies. You need to come up with innovative ways of recovery.
“These are teachers who are in the system and are being paid, so there are ways of tracking the monies,” member of the Committee and Atwima Nwabiagya South MP, Shirley Kyei, emphasised.
