NPP overhauls election rules to boost transparency and order

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced major changes to its internal election guidelines after facing challenges during its ongoing registration and electoral processes.

The decision was made at an emergency meeting of the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, at its headquarters.

The NEC acted on behalf of the National Council, in line with the party’s constitution.

In a statement signed by General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong, the party said the revised guidelines are aimed at improving transparency, strengthening internal democracy, and ensuring smoother and more credible elections across all levels.

Under the new rules, polling station elections can be suspended if disputes arise especially when members, including those registered online, are prevented from voting. Such cases will be referred through constituency structures to regional committees for resolution.

The party has also limited polling station executive positions to 25 and clarified rules for cluster polling stations, allowing members to contest within their local electoral areas.

Eligibility rules have been tightened, requiring members to live and vote in the same polling station where they intend to contest, except in special locations like security zones, schools, ministries, markets, and hospitals.

At the electoral area level, a maximum of 10 executive positions can be contested. Polling station executives must resign from their roles before contesting at this level.

For chapter and branch elections, voting can now take place either in person or through the party’s official e-voting platform. Members must have been active for at least two years to qualify to vote or contest.

The NEC has also formed an ad-hoc committee, chaired by former party chairman Peter Mac Manu, to develop a detailed manual outlining the roles and responsibilities of party officials at all levels.

The NPP is urging all members to study and follow the new guidelines, stating that the reforms are meant to promote unity, inclusiveness, and credibility within the party.
