Staff of the National Identification Authority (NIA) who belong to the Public Services Workers’ Union (PSWU) have declared an indefinite nationwide strike over unresolved concerns about their conditions of service. The industrial action is expected to begin on Wednesday, May 13, 2026.
The union announced the decision after its Divisional Executive Council met following the expiry of a seven-day ultimatum previously issued by the national leadership of the PSWU. According to the union, members unanimously agreed to begin the strike because their concerns remain unresolved.
In a statement, the union directed all members across the country to stay away from work until management and the relevant authorities respond to their demands.
“On Wednesday, May 13, 2026, no member shall report to work. You will rise from your beds and return to them, until further notice, and until our just demands are met,” the statement said.
Before the strike officially starts, workers have been instructed to wear red clothing or red armbands to work on Monday, May 11, and Tuesday, May 12, as a sign of protest and unity.
Union leaders warned that the industrial action would continue until meaningful steps are taken to address workers’ grievances.
“Let there be no misunderstanding: this strike will remain in force until our collective voice is heard and our conditions are addressed,” the release stressed.
The union has also tasked its regional officers to monitor compliance with the directive in all operational areas.
“Our resolve is our weapon; our solidarity is our shield. Only through unwavering unity will we make this struggle a success,” the statement added.
If no agreement is reached before the planned strike date, services at NIA offices nationwide could face major disruptions. Activities such as Ghana Card registration, replacements, and information updates are likely to be affected.
The statement was jointly signed by Godsway Ayivor Bismark and Francis Bangfudem Nyuzaghl, who appealed to workers to remain united throughout the protest.
