A 28-year-old man, Bismark Aduah, is serving a five-month prison sentence at the Winneba Local Prison after being convicted of theft following a dispute involving his longtime girlfriend’s family.
Speaking in an interview, Bismark shared his side of the story, insisting that he never intended to steal. According to him, he was only trying to recover personal belongings and items he had purchased during his relationship with his girlfriend, 27-year-old Rebecca Badu.
Bismark explained that he and Rebecca had been together for nine years and had lived together in Ashaiman for the past two years.
However, he said their relationship had long been opposed by Rebecca’s mother, who reportedly disapproved of him from the beginning.
He alleged that tensions escalated when they decided to return to Rebecca’s mother’s residence to collect their belongings.
Since they could not gain access to the house, Bismark admitted that they forced their way in by breaking the door and its lock before removing the items.
The belongings were later transported to Rebecca’s father’s residence.
The incident prompted Rebecca’s mother to file a complaint with the police, accusing the pair of theft. They were subsequently arrested, prosecuted, and detained while the case was heard in court.
Bismark disclosed that the Afransi Court found him guilty and sentenced him to five months in prison. In addition to the custodial sentence, the court imposed a fine of GH¢1,560.
He said he had already spent about two weeks behind bars but remained unable to pay the fine required for his release.
Rebecca, who was also convicted in connection with the incident, received a lighter sentence of one month and two weeks in prison.
Bismark revealed to Crime Check that despite his own legal troubles, he managed to pay Rebecca’s fine, allowing her to regain her freedom.
