The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has partnered with Google for Education to introduce artificial intelligence (AI) tools to students and staff as part of efforts to improve teaching, learning, research and administration.
The partnership, led by the university’s E-Learning Centre, will give about 95,000 students, lecturers and administrative staff access to Google Workspace for Education Fundamentals, including Gemini and Gemini Notebook.
The initiative is expected to strengthen KNUST’s digital learning system and provide members of the university community with modern AI tools to support their academic and professional activities.
Under the arrangement, users will be able to access the Google services using their existing KNUST credentials. The university’s Information Technology Services (UITS) has configured a directory integration and Single Sign-On system to make the process easier.
KNUST said the AI tools are being provided under Google’s Core Services framework. This means institutional research data, student records and operational information will not be used to train public AI models, while access will remain limited to authorised members of the university.
The partnership also includes training programmes to help staff make effective use of the new technology. Virtual training sessions for faculty members are expected to begin in September 2026, while a physical Gemini Academy is scheduled for November to train selected educators and technical staff.
Google and KNUST are also working to integrate Gemini into the university’s Moodle-based Learning Management System. This is expected to make AI tools more accessible within the existing online learning environment.
Director of the E-Learning Centre, Ing. Prof. Emmanuel Kofi Akowuah, said the partnership would help KNUST transform teaching, learning, research and innovation through the use of advanced AI technologies.
The initiative will also support student entrepreneurs and founders through access to the Google for Startups Cloud Programme and Google Cloud credits to develop technology-based projects and businesses.
