Ghanaians advised to avoid travel to South Africa

The Government of Ghana has advised its citizens to exercise extreme caution and avoid non-essential travel to South Africa following reports of increasing xenophobic attacks targeting Africans in the country.

In a travel advisory issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on June 1, 2026, the government expressed concern over the growing violence and hostility directed at African migrants by groups claiming to be anti-immigrant vigilantes.

According to the statement, the attacks have resulted in injuries, the closure and takeover of businesses, looting, and the destruction of property belonging to foreign nationals.

The government said it is closely monitoring the situation and has already taken several diplomatic steps in response.

These measures include lodging formal protests at the highest diplomatic level, summoning South Africa’s Acting High Commissioner in Accra, and petitioning the African Union over the reported attacks.

The advisory also revealed that efforts are underway to evacuate Ghanaian nationals who may be affected by the unrest.

Authorities indicated that they are working with relevant institutions and officials in South Africa to ensure the safety and welfare of Ghanaians living there.

Ghanaian citizens currently residing in South Africa have been urged to stay in regular contact with the Ghana High Commission for consular assistance and updates.

In addition, Ghana called on the South African government to provide adequate security for all affected African communities and take decisive action to restore law and order.

The statement emphasised the need for authorities to uphold the ideals of Pan-Africanism and African unity by protecting all people living within the country, regardless of their nationality.

It assured the public that it will continue to engage South African authorities and other stakeholders to address the situation and ensure the protection of Ghanaians affected by the reported attacks.
