‘Dumsor’ due to weak cables, overloaded transformers – ECG

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has admitted that there are ongoing unexpected power outages in some parts of the country.

The company says these problems are mainly due to issues within its power distribution system.

According to ECG, the outages are largely caused by old infrastructure, weak cables, and overloaded transformers, which are putting pressure on the system.

In a statement released on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, ECG said it is working to fix the problem through a major nationwide project being carried out together with the government.

The project, called the Transformer Upgrade and Replacement Programme (TURP), is being introduced in phases across the country.

As part of this plan, more than 2,500 transformers will be installed nationwide to increase capacity and make the electricity supply more stable.

ECG noted that while the work is ongoing, there may be some planned power cuts, but the public will be informed ahead of time.

The company assured customers that its technical teams are working hard to restore power in affected areas and reduce disruptions as much as possible.

ECG also apologised for the inconvenience and asked customers to be patient as the repair and upgrade works continue.

“We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience and kindly ask for the patience of affected customers. Our teams are working diligently to reach all affected areas,” ECG said.

Customers who are experiencing unexpected outages are encouraged to report them by calling the ECG hotline on 0302611611 so the issue can be addressed quickly.

ECG also reaffirmed its commitment to providing reliable and stable electricity across the country, adding that the ongoing upgrades are important for improving the national power distribution system.
