Bawumia unveils NPP plan to scout parliamentary candidates

New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia says the party has begun a nationwide search for parliamentary candidates it believes can win seats in the 2028 general elections.

According to Dr. Bawumia, the initiative is aimed at identifying potential candidates beyond those who may emerge from the party’s internal parliamentary primaries.

He explained that winning an NPP primary does not necessarily mean a candidate will be able to win the subsequent parliamentary election.

“Some people can win parliamentary primaries because they have money, but they cannot win the election,” Dr. Bawumia said.

He added: “If you leave it to them, they will win the primary, then you have lost the seat.”

Dr. Bawumia disclosed that the candidate-search exercise is already underway, with the party relying on more than one independent source to assess potential candidates across constituencies.

He said the NPP would compare the findings from the various assessments to identify individuals with the potential to win particular parliamentary seats.

“If we find out that this is the person who can win us the seat, we will persuade that person to become a candidate,” he said.

The former Vice President also indicated that the party intends to organise its parliamentary primaries as early as possible to complete its internal elections and give candidates sufficient time to prepare for the 2028 elections.

He said the process would be undertaken with transparency as the party seeks to strengthen its parliamentary representation.

The move forms part of the NPP’s broader reorganisation ahead of the 2028 general elections, following the election of new national executives at the party’s National Delegates Conference.

Dr. Bawumia has urged the new leadership and party members to work together as the NPP begins preparations for the next presidential and parliamentary elections.
