The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Ahafo Ano South West in the Ashanti Region, Abubakar Sedik, has died after a brief illness.
Mr Sedik reportedly passed away on Sunday evening, September 20, 2026, shortly after returning to Mankranso from Kumasi, where he had attended a meeting involving stakeholders and the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga.
According to the Ahafo Ano South West District Assembly, the DCE fell ill after returning from the meeting but his condition deteriorated, resulting in his death.
The Assembly announced his passing in a social media post, paying tribute to him for his service to the people of the district.
“Rest well, Hon. Abubakar Sedik. You served your people with a good heart,” the Assembly stated.
The Minister, Mahama Ayariga, was in Kumasi as part of engagements with stakeholders on the completion of the Kejetia Phase Two Redevelopment project.
Mr Sedik’s death comes at a time when his administration had attracted public attention over an alleged plan to demolish a school facility at Mankranso to make way for the construction of a market under the government’s 24-hour economy initiative. The allegation had been denied by the late DCE.
Mr Sedik was also the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for the area during the 2024 general elections.
The Ashanti Regional Minister has expressed sadness over his death, describing it as a loss to the late DCE’s family, the people of Ahafo Ano South West, his colleagues, the Ashanti Region and the government.
