Accra Mayor Michael Kpakpo Allotey has ordered an immediate ban on hawking, trading and all unauthorised activities under the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange. He warned that anyone who ignores the directive will face prosecution.
The Mayor gave the order while leading a team from the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) to remove food vendors, beggars and people sleeping under the Korle Klottey section of the interchange.
The operation formed part of his working visit to the Okaikoi South Sub-Metropolitan District, where he inspected building permits, sanitation conditions and compliance with the Assembly’s by-laws.
Speaking during the exercise, Allotey said the AMA would no longer allow anyone to use the area beneath the interchange for trading, food vending, sleeping or any other unauthorised activity. He stressed that the space must remain clean, safe and free from obstruction.
The Mayor also warned that the Assembly would take legal action against anyone caught selling, hawking or engaging in illegal activities under the interchange.
He explained that the operation is part of a wider plan to restore order and improve sanitation across Accra.
During the exercise, the task force removed makeshift structures and other unauthorised activities that had taken over parts of the area.
According to the Assembly, these activities had created poor sanitary conditions and posed safety risks to both motorists and pedestrians.
Before moving to the interchange, the Mayor led another operation to demolish illegal wooden structures built along the shoulder of Otublohum Road near the Circle VVIP Station.
He said the unauthorised structures had contributed to traffic congestion, poor sanitation and the obstruction of public spaces. He added that the AMA would continue to remove structures put up without approval.
The Mayor further instructed owners of drinking spots, managers of the VVIP Station and cattle owners operating along Otublohum Road to clear choked gutters within 24 hours or face sanctions.
Allotey reaffirmed the Assembly’s commitment to enforcing its by-laws on sanitation, building permits and public order.
He also appealed to residents, traders, transport operators and business owners to support efforts to keep Accra clean, safe and well organised.
