VGMA Now TGMA Is Unfair – Nana Agyeman

Ghanaian musician Nana Agyeman has alleged that an unknown caller once suggested that his hit song Araba could win multiple awards at the Ghana Music Awards if he agreed to meet and hold discussions.

Speaking on Asempa FM, Nana Agyeman said Araba was one of the biggest songs at the time and received nominations in several categories.

“We were nominated for the Araba song because it was a hit. It was also in all the categories,” he said.

According to him, he received a phone call from a stranger who claimed the song could secure as many as five awards.

“A stranger called me and said, ‘If you want Araba to win the Ghana Music Awards, we need to meet and talk,’” he recounted.

He said the caller insisted that further discussions were necessary before the awards could be secured.

“I was told that I could get five awards for the song, but I had to do a thorough discussion with them first,” he stated.

Nana Agyeman said he ignored the request and did not pursue the matter.

However, he claims that despite the song’s popularity and nominations, it failed to win any of the awards for which it had been shortlisted.

“I did not mind the person, and because of that, I did not win any of the awards I was nominated for,” he alleged.

The musician further recalled that questions were later raised about the song after it was reportedly described as containing inappropriate language.

“It also came out that the song was profane, but that raised questions because why did they nominate it in the first place?” he asked.

According to him, the awards scheme’s own rules prohibited the nomination of songs considered profane, making the development difficult for him to understand.

He said he chose not to publicly challenge the issue at the time because he was still new to the music industry and did not want controversy to negatively affect his career.

“I kept mute because I was a new artiste and did not want any scandal to destroy my career,” he added.
