CAGD pays promotion arrears to 56,003 teachers ahead of deadline

The Controller and Accountant-General’s Department (CAGD) has paid promotion-related salary adjustments and arrears to 56,003 teachers of the Ghana Education Service (GES), meeting the October 16 deadline agreed with teacher unions.

The Department disclosed that 49,725 teachers received their payments on October 15, 2026, together with their October salaries, while 6,278 others were paid in September. The payments cover salary adjustments and arrears dating back to January 1, 2026.

The payments follow an agreement reached on October 2 between government representatives and teacher unions at a meeting held at the Ministry of Education. The meeting set October 16 as the deadline for settling outstanding promotion-related payments.

According to CAGD, GES had processed and submitted supporting documents for 56,633 of the approximately 80,000 teachers reported to have been promoted. After verifying the records, the Department approved payments for 56,003 teachers.

However, 630 cases remain outstanding due to discrepancies identified during the verification process. CAGD said it is awaiting the necessary corrections from GES before payments can be made to the affected teachers.

In a statement issued on Thursday, October 15, 2026, the Department further revealed that the cases of the remaining 23,367 promoted teachers had yet to be processed, with the required supporting documents still awaiting submission by GES for verification.

CAGD explained that it had completed payments for all teachers whose submitted records satisfied the necessary payroll requirements. It added that outstanding payments for eligible teachers would be processed once complete and accurate documentation was received and verified.

The Department expressed appreciation to GES, teacher unions, and the relevant ministries and agencies for their cooperation in facilitating the payments.
