The Ghana Education Service (GES) has received a committee recommendation for the reposting of Obuasi Senior High Technical School headmaster Abdulai Zakaria and other staff implicated in the August 5, 2026, student riot.
The recommendation, contained in a report submitted to GES headquarters, is intended to help restore peace and address security concerns at the school. However, the service has not taken a final decision, as the report is still under review.
Dr. Issahaque Munawaru, Deputy Director-General of GES in charge of Quality and Access, said the regional committee made about 27 or 28 recommendations following its investigation into the disturbance.
Recommendation 23 specifically proposed that the headmaster and other staff be “reposted to other institutions or duty stations in the interest of the service”.
Dr. Munawaru explained that GES had referred the professional aspects of the incident to the committee, while the police handled the criminal investigation.
The August riot saw some students attack Zakaria, injure him and destroy property at his bungalow, including a vehicle. Six students suspected of involvement were arrested by the police.
Meanwhile, Zakaria has been suspended following separate allegations of sexual misconduct involving some female students.
The allegations, which emerged through a documentary featuring accounts from alleged victims, are under investigation.
Dr. Munawaru said any staff member found culpable of sexual misconduct would be dismissed, stressing that the service would act on established evidence.
The committee also recommended disciplinary action against staff, students and other individuals whose conduct raised concerns, as well as the dissolution of informal student groupings.
