One rearrested, 5 at large after Konongo police cells break-out

Police are searching for five remand prisoners who escaped from the cells at Konongo in the Asante Akyem Central Municipality of the Ashanti Region.

Six inmates reportedly broke out of the police cells after creating an opening believed to have led to the station’s detached washrooms. They subsequently climbed out and fled.

A manhunt was launched following the incident, resulting in the recapture of one of the escapees in a suburb of Kumasi. The remaining five prisoners are still at large.

Asante Akyem Central Municipal Chief Executive, Dr. Ebenezer Ekow Aidoo, confirmed the incident and disclosed that the Municipal Security Council was taking steps to strengthen security at the facility.

He said measures were being considered to reinforce the walls of the police cells and prevent similar incidents in the future.

Dr. Aidoo also outlined longer-term plans to improve policing in the municipality, including the construction of a new police station and an increase in the number of officers, particularly those assigned to night duties.

In addition, the council intends to improve lighting around the police station and install surveillance cameras to strengthen monitoring and help prevent future escapes.
