15 busted over sandwinning on Accra-Kumasi Expressway

National Security personnel in the Ashanti Region have arrested 15 individuals suspected of engaging in illegal sandwinning activities along the Accra-Kumasi Expressway project.

The operation also resulted in the impoundment of six trucks, a wheel loader and other machinery allegedly used in the activities.

According to National Security personnel who confirmed the incident to Citi News, the suspects were arrested during a swoop in the Sewua–Donyina–Appiadu enclave and have since been transported to Accra for further questioning.

A viral video showed the individuals excavating and removing white sand from the Accra–Kumasi Expressway for commercial purposes.

Security officers have vowed to pursue other suspects who remain at large and are believed to be linked to the activities.

Bosomtwe District Chief Executive, Ing. Abdullah Hamidu, confirmed the incident in an interview with Citi News. He also dismissed claims that the Assembly was unaware of the activity, which reportedly began after an opinion leader at Sewua-Ayoum handed over the land to the sandwinners.

He said the Assembly had convened an emergency meeting with chiefs and Assembly Members in the area to prevent further environmental destruction and protect the Expressway project from potential threats.

The Ashanti Regional Security Council is also expected to meet to discuss the matter and determine measures to maintain surveillance along the stretch, with the aim of preventing similar activities before they escalate.
